Sarasota, Florida, January 26, 2006 – After a two-month set up and configuration, Umialik Insurance Company, a multiple line, property and casualty insurance company headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska, went live with Tropics workers’ compensation policy and claims systems.
A two-month software system set up is rare in the commercial insurance sector. Umialik President Mary Mastascusa attributed it to Tropics knowledgeable staff. Umialik also shipped their database server to Tropics’ headquarters in Sarasota, FL to reduce set up time further. Tropics installed the software and configured it to Umialik’s specifications in sunny Sarasota before going on site in Anchorage. Tropics Vice President of Software Engineering Stephen Massingale served as the project manager and said Umialik’s responsive staff aided in the quick implementation.
Umialik Assigned Risk Manager Kathy Brannon said the underwriting and claims departments are already impressed with the system’s functionality. She speculated the increased productivity, especially in report writing, will reduce the need for new staff in policy and accounting.
Umialik was awarded a state contract to be one of the service providers for the Alaska Assigned Risk Pool beginning January 1, 2006. Individual states establish risk plans under the Assigned Risk Pool to ensure employers can obtain workers' compensation insurance even if insurance companies are unwilling to write such insurance voluntarily. Umialik is one of few carriers qualified to service the Assigned Risk Pool, which is administered by National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI).
Mastascusa said, “Tropics comprehensive systems enabled us to meet NCCI performance standards and to serve the high volume of new risk plan contracts.” She added, “the fully integrated policy and claims system did everything we needed.”
Tropics’ tight integration with ImageRight, a third party document imaging solution company, was an added bonus. As an ImageRight Platinum Business member, Tropics Software Technologies has achieved the highest integration level possible. Only a handful of other companies can claim the same. Umialik had recently purchased the ImageRight system and as Mastascusa explained, “Selecting Tropics fit with achieving a completely paperless system.” Umialik has access to and can view any document within the policy or claims system.
