Tropics Software Technologies met UPMC’s aggressive timelines to go live with a new agency and policy administration system to support its new Workers’ Compensation insurance offering to Pennsylvania employers.
In the summer of 2010 the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a global health enterprise headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA selected and implemented Tropics for its new agency and policy administration systems. As a critical piece of its aggressive plans to offer workers’ compensation insurance to Pennsylvania employers, UPMC is utilizing the new system to offer agencies the flexibility to perform web-based application submission, on-line inquiry functionality and integrated document management. Additionally, Tropics is handling the back-office policy issuance, policy administration and billing administration software functions for UPMC.
“We want to make it clear to Pennsylvania agencies and employers that UPMC‘s new workers’ compensation program will provide the type of top-notch service that has always been the hallmark of the UPMC organization. Therefore, after deciding that Tropics would provide the optimal experience for our internal and external system users, we elected to make the investment in what we saw as the best workers’ compensation system in the market. The start-up nature of this Workers’ Compensation program required a software vendor with deep expertise in workers’ compensation and an ability to bring the system live in a short timeframe. Tropics has helped us meet that important goal.” – Pat Haughey, UPMC’s Workers’ Compensation Executive Director
When an organization embarks on an initiative to roll out a new workers’ compensation line of business, it is essential that agents are provided with comfort that the carrier will be able to support the WC offering in an effective and efficient manner. Therefore, it was critical to UPMC that Tropics be brought up, not only quickly, but also in a quality manner that would ensure agents and insureds will have a positive experience with the self-service web portals. Accordingly, Tropics executed an implementation strategy that allowed UPMC to begin quoting new business within 30 days of project initiation, full internal policy administration within 100 days, and full agency and insured web portal processing within 160 days. This effective “speed to market” deployment has been a catalyst in UPMC’s rapid growth over the past two years.
